How to Pray the ACTS Method
If you've ever sat down to pray and thought, "I don't know what to say," the ACTS method is for you. It's a simple four-step pattern — Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication — that has helped Christians pray with focus and honesty for generations. Here's how each step works, with an example prayer you can use today.
What is the ACTS prayer method?
ACTS is an acronym for four movements of prayer:
- A — Adoration: praising God for who He is
- C — Confession: honestly naming where you've fallen short
- T — Thanksgiving: thanking God for what He has done
- S — Supplication: bringing your requests to Him
The order matters more than you might expect. Beginning with adoration lifts your eyes off your problems before you ever mention them. Confession clears the air. Thanksgiving softens an anxious heart. By the time you reach your requests, you're praying from peace instead of panic. The pattern echoes the shape of the Lord's Prayer, which also begins with praise — "Hallowed be thy name" — before any petition.
Step 1: Adoration — praise God for who He is
Adoration is praise that isn't about you. Not "thank you for helping me" (that comes later), but simply telling God what is true about Him: He is good, faithful, merciful, unchanging.
"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." — Psalm 136:1 (KJV)
Example: "Lord, I praise You because Your goodness is not temporary or conditional — it is the very essence of who You are. Your mercy greets me anew each morning."
If you're stuck, borrow words from the Psalms — they are a prayer book for exactly this step.
Step 2: Confession — be honest about where you've fallen short
Confession isn't self-punishment; it's honesty in a safe place. Name the thing specifically — impatience with your kids, a grudge you're nursing, words you regret — and receive forgiveness.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Example: "Father, I confess I've been short-tempered and quick to assume the worst this week. Forgive me, and soften what has grown hard in me."
Step 3: Thanksgiving — thank God for what He has done
Where adoration praises God's character, thanksgiving names His gifts: the people you love, provision you didn't earn, prayers already answered, and the small mercies you usually rush past. Gratitude, practiced daily, quietly rewires how you see your life.
Example: "Thank You for my family around the table tonight, for work for my hands, and for the ways You carried me through a week I didn't think I could manage."
Step 4: Supplication — bring your requests
Finally — requests. Supplication simply means asking. Pray for your own needs and for others: the friend awaiting a diagnosis, the marriage under strain, the decision you can't see around.
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." — Philippians 4:6 (KJV)
Example: "Lord, You know what tomorrow holds and I don't. Give me wisdom for the decision in front of me, healing for Mom, and peace for my anxious heart. I trust You with the outcomes."
A complete 5-minute ACTS prayer
Put together, an ACTS prayer can be as simple as this — about a minute per step, with a pause between each:
"Lord, You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. (pause)
I confess my worry has been louder than my trust this week — forgive me. (pause)
Thank You for the people You've placed around me and for carrying me this far. (pause)
And now I bring You what I'm holding: [name your requests]. Not my will, but Yours. Amen."

What does ACTS stand for in prayer?
Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication — praise God, confess honestly, give thanks, then bring your requests.
How long should an ACTS prayer take?
As long as you have. Many people pray through ACTS in about five minutes — a minute or two per step. The pattern matters more than the length.
Is the ACTS method in the Bible?
The acronym is a modern teaching tool, but each movement is deeply biblical — the Psalms model adoration, 1 John 1:9 confession, Psalm 100 thanksgiving, and Philippians 4:6 supplication. The Lord's Prayer follows a very similar shape.
